Every day, more than two thousand cows and calves are slaughtered. Compared to 2011 this figure is on the decline, mainly due to the fact that for a number of reasons, the consumption of "red meat" is under debate and therefore on the decline too. Still, Belgian meat is a top quality product and a nice steak, in combination with French fries, continues to rank first on the average Belgian's list of favourite meals. But here too the saying goes "Enjoy, but responsibly!". Belgian meat is highly appreciated abroad as well. A large part of all Belgian meat produced is destined for export markets.
Not all beef is "steak"
Meat is a product that can come from bulls, oxen, heafers or cows. The latter can be subdivided into cows for milk or for meat production. Meat coming from horned cattle can be quite different in terms of structure, colour and taste. A lot depends on the kind of animal, the way is is bred, the feeding and the animal's age when slaughtered.
