Preparatory works Foodhall started

The preparatory works for the construction of the new foodhall have started. Last week the building contractor already made a passage way towards the Clemenceau metro by removing the concrete plant containers. At present, the old houses in decay are being demolished and the concrete plate behind the freshmarket  is being removed. These works are estimated to last till 18 October.

On Wednesday 4 September, Abattoir S.A. organised an information meeting during which Joris TIEBOUT and Jo HUYGH explained to the people living in the vicinity what the timing of the works will be like and where the building-yard will be situated on the Abattoir site.

In the coming weeks the old storage tanks will be removed. The soil will be sifted and analysed. The concrete and the bricks will be crushed on-site. Contaminated soil will be evacuated, entailing loads of new ground to be conveyed. During week 42, tests will take place to measure the compression degree of the soil, the ground conveyed, the profound foundations and the foundations composed of soil, sand or gravel. These tests are necessary for measuring the settling of the rigid plateau exposed to a centripetal force.

The daily activities on the building yard will take place between 7.00 and 15.30 hours. Incoming and outgoing traffic will make use of the Quai de l’Industrie 168 and all along the canal in order to avoid as much as possible the chaussée de Mons and the rue Ropsy Chaudron.

The actual construction of the hall will start in November. On 7 November the official first stone will be laid.
