Abatan takes part in the first of a series of publications on Cureghem

CUREGHEM PART I – THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The autor: Dirk De Caluwé

Cureghem is quite a fascinating and seductive district, not in the least because of its versatility and its enormous richness. No material wealth though, because Cureghem holds no score in this respect, but  huge historical, social, cultural and ethnic riches.

This first brochure places Cureghem in its historical context, with special attention for district contracts, a couple of remarkable historical buildings, museums and protected heritage.

'Cureghem part I – 'The historical context'

is the first out of a series of publications on Cureghem that will appear in the years to come. Each brochure focuses on a particular aspect of this district, or will look at Cureghem from a different angle.
Cureghem is a district of Anderlecht, situated at the other side of the canal, bordering the city of Brussels, and too often in the media under the heading “Bad News”, a district of fear and insecurity. Certain media even qualify Curghem as a “no go zone”, a district better to be avoided.
This image is totally unjust. On the copntrary, Cureghem is a quite fascinating and seductive district, not in the least because of its versatility and its enormous richness. No material wealth though, because Cureghem holds no score in this respect, but  huge historical, social, cultural and ethnic riches.
This first brochure puts Cureghem in its historical context, with a great deal of attention for the “district contracts”, a (political) instrument that has become common practice in the Brussels Capital Region when  dealing with the rehabilitation of vulnerable districts. A couple of remarkable historical buildings, museums and protected heritage also get a fair share of attention.
Subjects that will possibly be treated in the next issues are education, training, emplyment, housing, health, children and youngsters, art and culture, deportation and resistance, migration, intercultural relations, religion, the Islam, architecture, trade, cleanliness, environmental care, safety, streetnames, …

This publication wants to be more than merely another brochure. Each issue is an invitation for discovering Cureghem: with a map and the brochure at hand you are ready to hit the road. Guided group excursions are also possible. Each brochure features a thematic walk, a social district discovery. By doing so, Cureghem will turn into a ‘Must go zone” with only one motto: “I love Cureghem.”
